THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, March 7, 2006.

Hazel Cantonwine, 81, of Boone and formerly of the Ames and Gilbert areas, died March 4, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 8, at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall streets in Boone. Burial will be in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.

Hazel was born Dec. 23, 1924, in Moingona, the daughter of French and Sadie (Wight) Hitsman. She attended Jordan Consolidated School. Hazel married Russell Leigh Cantonwine Jan. 7, 1943, in San Diego.

She was employed in assembly at Bournes in Ames for 33 years, retiring in 1990. She moved to the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone three years ago. She enjoyed flower gardening, mushroom hunting and vegetable gardening with her husband. She also loved and cared for her Persian cat, Susan. In earlier years, she enjoyed playing softball and bowling. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the V.F.W. of Boone, the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion of Ames for 50 years, and a 50 year member of the Loyal Order of Moose No. 733 of Ames.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on May 11, 1980, and two brothers, Eugene and Verne Hitsman.

She is survived by one son, Harold "Hal" Cantonwine and wife, Karen of Ames; two daughters, Linda Chamberlin and husband, Dennis of Grand Junction, Colo., and Christina "Christie" Ross of Ankeny; one brother, Robert "Bob" Hitsman and a sister, Helen Page both of Boone; six grandchildren, Heather Dyer and husband Ronny Dyer of Des Moines, Michael Cantonwine and wife Kelley of Urbandale, Holly Figenshaw and husband Timothy of Bondurant, David Cantonwine of Ann Arbor, Mich., Eric Chamberlin of Denver, Colo., and Janine Chamberlin of Chicago; six great-grandchildren, Alicin and Erin Dyer, Cara, Kyle, and Cadee Figenshaw, and Arwen Cantonwine; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall streets from 2 until 9 p.m. today with the family present from 7 to 8:30 tonight. Visitation will continue from 8 a.m. until time of service Wednesday at the funeral chapel.

Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association or the family to be used at their discretion.
