James T. "Jim" Berggren (1924-2006)

TRI COUNTY TIMES, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, February 23, 2006.

James T. "Jim" Berggren went home to be with his Lord and Savior on February 15, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. A celebration of his life was held on Saturday, February 18, 2006, at the Polk City Evangelical Free Church, with interment at the Polk City Cemetery. The Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Madrid was in charge of arrangements.

Jim was born on June 19, 1924 to Rev. Walter C. and Fern Temple Berggren. He lived his entire life in the Polk City area. He graduated from Polk City High School in 1941. He attended Fletcher College in Oskaloosa, Iowa and Drake University in Des Moines. He served three years in the Army during WWII and was stationed in the South Pacific. He and Betty farmed for many years in the Polk City area, and he also sold insurance for Grinnell Mutual. He was treasurer for the Central District of the Evangelical Free Church for 16 years. He was an active member and held many offices at the Polk City Evangelical Free Church. He was a 60-year member of the American Legion Post 232.

He was united in marriage to Betty Hug on April 12, 1946, and they would have celebrated their 60th anniversary this year. He was an avid sports fan and over the years, enjoyed watching his children, grandchildren, and even one great-grandchild participate in numerous sports. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Jim is survived by his wife, Betty, of Polk City; son, Robert (Vicki) Berggren of LeGrand, IA; daughter, Peggy (Dennis) Jones of Davenport, IA; five grandchildren, Marcia (Jody) Boddicker, Eldridge, IA, Michelle (Mike) Simon, Wheaton, IL, Dan (Karen) Berggren, Des Moines, Darrin (Jess) Berggren, Denver, IA, and Matt Jones, Chicago, IL; eleven great-grandchildren; one brother, Rev. Paul Berggren of Long Lake, MN and two sisters, Annabel Satre and Lavonne Meyer, both of Minneapolis, MN; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harold Berggren; and two sisters, Fern Elaine Stover and Glorienne Henderson.
