Ruth Buchholtz, 95, died Thursday at the Northcrest Health Care Center in Ames. Her memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Northcrest in the Green Room. A private family burial will be at the Iowa State University Cemetery.Ruth Johnston Scott Buchholtz was born June 8, 1910, in Nevada to Ira J. and Elizabeth Johnston Scott. She graduated from Ames High School in 1926 and from the Department of Home Economics at Iowa State College in 1932. During her college years, she was in vocal music activities under the direction of Prof. Talbert MacRae and Rosalind Cook. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi social sorority. Her honoraries included Sigma Alpha Iota, music honorary; Mortar Board, all-college recognition; and Phi Kappa Phi, scholastic honorary. After teaching several years at Kanawha, she and Walter Buchholtz set up their home in Ames where Walter was finishing his doctoral work in Plant Pathology. Ames was Ruth's residence from the time of her wedding to the present except for five years when she and Walter lived in Brookings, S.D.
During her life, she was active in Ames First Christian Church where she served in many capacities including Choir director, Memorials chairman, Sunday School teacher, Board Secretary, and Elder. Ruth was an active member of P.E.O., the Ames Women's Club, and the Faculty Women's Club. She has resided at Northcrest Retirement Village since 1987 and served as secretary on the board of directors. She helped maintain the resident directory and was active in the weekly vesper services for the residents.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Walter F. Buchholtz, her son, Dr. William J. Buchholtz of Austin, Texas; and her two sisters, Mary Edwards and Helen Minor. She is survived by her children, Mrs. Kathryn E. Marshall of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Dr. Thomas W. Buchholtz of Hilton Head, S.C.; and Mrs. Margaret B. Grabau of Eden Prairie, Minn.
Ruth has 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Although Ruth enjoyed knitting, playing bridge and visiting her children and grandchildren, her life's passion was music. She played piano and sang with her sister, Mary. She participated in a variety of vocal groups at school and Church. She directed the First Christian Church choir for seventeen years. She provided needed motherly encouragement for her four children's music activities, and she helped facilitate the music at Northcrest's weekly vesper services for more than a decade.
Knowing Ruth still has many songs yet to sing, her family trusts a robe awaits for her to join God's heavenly chorus.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the First Christian Church Love Fund.
