THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Saturday, February 4, 2006.

Mildred Arta Hetzel, 97, of Ames, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, at Green Hills Health Care Center. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 6, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Chuck Kelsey officiating.

Mildred was born on Feb. 8, 1908, in Clarence, to Cleve and Luella (McConkie) Long. She is a graduate of Upper Iowa University with a bachelor's degree in Education.

Mildred married Walter Hetzel on June 12, 1933, in Stanwood. In 1955, she moved to Ames from Decorah. She was a teacher for four years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, PEO Chapter H.O., Questers 207 and a long-time volunteer of Mary Greeley Medical Center Auxiliary. Mildred was an avid bridge player, enjoyed flowers, had a keen interest in education at Ames High School and was an Iowa State University Cyclones fan.

Mildred is survived by her daughter, Sue (Chuck) Kolbe of Des Moines; her son Stephen (Jil) Hetzel of Scotts Bluff, Neb.; five grandchildren, Caran McKee, Jill Fialkov, Maggie Kolbe, Amanda Rasmussen and Nick Hetzel; and eight great grandchildren.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, who died Feb. 18, 1995.

Adams Funeral Home in Ames is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Israel Family Hospice House or Green Hills Retirement Community.
