Violet M. Egeland, 95, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, at Bethany Manor in Story City. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Garden City. Burial will be in the cemetery at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Garden City.

Violet M. Tjelmeland was born May 18, 1910, to Halvor and Belle (Sorem) Tjelmeland on their home place southwest of Garden City. She was one of nine children and was confirmed by the Rev. J. N. Sandven at Zion Lutheran Church near Garden City, where she was a lifelong member and belonged to the Ladies Aid. She received her education at a rural school in Southwest Concord Township.

She married Helmer O. Egeland Feb. 1, 1933, at the Rev. H.N. Bakkes's home in McCallsburg. Four sons, Orlene, Irving, Marvin and Arnold, were born to this union. Violet and Helmer farmed near Garden City and later east of Randall until his death in 1964, the result of a car accident. She moved to Story City in 1966.

She worked at Bethany Manor for two years as a nurse's aide and was a volunteer there for 36 years. She made more than 200 quilts with other ladies at Bethany Manor. At home, she also made beautiful quilts for her sons and their families and for others. She made hundreds of lovely crochet doilies and other pieces, and so very often would give a doilie to visitors. She was able to care for her yard and do her own snow removal until age 89.

Throughout the years, her family treasured birthdays and other gatherings at her home, especially Christmas Eve, enjoying her delicious Norwegian meals and pastries. Her wonderful sense of humor brought joy to all who knew her. Although unable to speak during the last few years of her life, she will be remembered for her wonderful smile, and for holding one's face in her hands to show her fondness towards them.

She died on the very day that would have been Violet and Helmer Egeland's 73rd anniversary. Memories of Violet as a very loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to all will be treasured forever.
Violet Tjelmeland Egeland was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one son, one daughter-in-law, and her brothers Martin, Andrew, Ward, Harry, and Tilmer Tjelmeland and one brother who died in infancy, and by her sisters Bertha Osmundson and Berdella Sampson.

Those remaining to cherish her memory are her sons and their families, Orlene and Judy Egeland of Story City, Loren Egeland of Story City, Nicole and daughter of Fort Dodge, Dalton, and Cheyenne of Cascade, Lynn and Kathy Egeland, and Lance Egeland; Irving and Sarah Egeland of Ankeny, Mark Hovland, Jamie and Seth, of Phoenix, Michele and Reginald Richardson, Thaddeus Bohn, Sarah Bohn and fiancé Jeff Barton, Gina, and Reggie Richardson Jr. of Ames, Kathleen Belding, Mickey, Jordy, and Emelia, and Michael Belding, all of Story City, and Anne and Tom Owens, Madison, Zachary, and Eric of Ankeny; her late son Marvin's son, Aaron of Las Vegas; and Arnold and Sharon Egeland of Boone, Dan and Patsy Egeland and Zachary of Clarks, Neb., and Dale and Kari Egeland, Madelin and Jacob of Boone. She also is survived by her late husband's brother's wife, Annie Egeland of Estherville; many nieces and nephews; cousins' families; and a host of friends.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Bethany Manor Chapel in Story City. A prayer service will be at 6:30 p.m.

Memorials may be given to Zion Church or Bethany Manor.
