THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, December 27, 2005.

Leslie E. Norris, 73, of Ames and formerly of Baltimore, died Dec. 24, at his home, under hospice care. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 30, at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Baltimore. Burial will be in Crownsville Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, Md. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, at Bridgeway Church in Ames.

Leslie, also known as "Jimmy," was born to Lloyd Wood and Esther Mary Norris Nov. 27, 1932, in Baltimore. At the age of 14, he became interested in the sports of football and boxing, and played for the Police Athletic League in Baltimore. Following graduation from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for more than 20 years during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam era. He was stationed in Germany and Okinawa, Japan, as well as other military bases across the United States. He received the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with device 1960. He was a five time All-Army boxing inter-service champion in the Pacific and European theaters and an alternate on the U.S. Olympic boxing team in 1960.

Leslie was married to Gloria Stewart and together they raised three children. He was a member of the Committee United to Save Sandtown; St. Edwards Catholic Church in Baltimore; Knights and Ladies of St. Peter Claver; Freetown No. 16 DAV; and VFW.

He is survived by two sons, Michael L. Norris of Ames and Vincent E. Norris of Indianapolis; one daughter, Major Kimberley D. Norris-Jones of Columbia, S.C., and currently deployed to Kuwait; grandchildren, Wesley, Heather, David, Kristen and Ciara; sisters, Juanita Smallwood and Marie Rodgers, both of Baltimore; sister, Esther Bernice Wiggins of Columbia, Md.; and several cousins, nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, at Burgee-Henss-Seitz Funeral Home, 3631 Falls Road, Baltimore, MD, 21211.

Stevens Memorial Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
