Dorothy E. Moeller, 88 of the Heartwood House in Ames and formerly of Boone passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the Heartwood House in Ames.
Dorothy Eileen Larson was born Dec. 18, 1916, in New Berlin, Ill., the daughter of Clarence and Mollie (Schelp) Larson. She was baptized into the Christian faith Jan.14, 1917.
She graduated from New Berlin High School. After continuing her education at Illinois Normal University for two years, she began a career of teaching. Meeting a young farmer, Albert Moeller, she moved to Boone to be married. The couple married on June 24, 1944, at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church. After two children, she gradually resumed her teaching career in a one room country school, two room parochial school and elementary grades at United Community School. During this time, she completed her four-year degree at Drake University. In her retirement she supervised home school families for Boone Community Schools, and finally, she privately tutored children from her apartment at the Eastern Star Home in Boone. While her work was teaching, her joy was family, gardening and church choir.
Dorothy was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in norhteast Boone County.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Albert in 2000. She is survived by her son, Gary Moeller and his wife Nancy of Boone; her daughter, Joyce Durlam and her husband David of Durham, N.C.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Adam Durlam and his wife Jennifer of Apex, North Carolina and their sons, Zach, Austin and Jackson; Jon Durlam of Chicago; Heather Krough and her husband J.P. and their son Max of North Liberty; and Stacy Moeller of Ames.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov.12, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in northeast Boone County. Rev. Bruce Lakamp will officiate.
Burial will be in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, next to the church.
Visitation will be held on Friday, Nov.11, at the Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home, Fifth and Story streets of Boone from 1 to 9 p.m., with the family present to greet friends at the funeral home from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12.
Memorials may be given to the St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home, Fifth and Story Streets of Boone are in charge of the arrangements.
