Funeral Services at Cambridge for Pioneer Woman

Special to the Journal:
Cambridge, Jan. 13 -- Funeral services for Mrs. Barbara Beck, 86, who died at her home here Jan. 4, were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. Shepherd of Ankeny, a former pastor. The Sutton sisters sang "Goodnight Here and Good Morning Up There," "Going Down the Valley One by One," "No Night There," with John Dyer at the piano.

The floral tributes were many and beautiful. The pallbearers were J. E. Davis, Cloyd Maxwell, W. E. Hawks, C. S. Kent, Elmer Jones and K. E. Nelson. Interment at Cambridge cemetery.

Barbara Malloy, daughter of James and Catherine Malloy, was born in Campbelltown, Scotland, Jan. 1, 1855, and passed away at her home here at 6:55 p. m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 1941, having reached the age of 86 years and three days.

Her family came to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, when she was two years old, moved to Nevada in 1867 and to Cambridge on March 1, 1868. With the exception of four years spent in Nebraska, this has since been her home, having lived on the same place all these years.

She was married to DeWitt Clinton Beck, May 14, 1885. To this union four children were born--two sons, Charles and James, who with her husband preceded her in death, and two daughters who survive her, Mrs. Margaret Maxwell of Maxwell and Nellie at home, as well as one grandson, Millard Boyd Maxwell, and several nieces and nephews.

Having been in failing health for the past year she was up and around her home until Tuesday morning Dec. 31, when she suffered a stroke--this and other complications due to age caused her passing.

She was a kind and loving mother and was admired by all who knew her. She had devoted her life to making a home for those whom she held dear to her. She will be most sincerely missed not only by her daughters but by the neighbors and friends whom she had known since coming to Cambridge.

Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. O. O. Holtby, Mr. and Mrs. Cloyd Maxwell, Mr. and Mrs. Vern Harmon, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Maxwell, Mr. and Mrs. Will Warren, Mr. and Mrs. Will Boitnott, Mrs. H. T. Farrar, Mrs. Will Ballard, Mrs. Richard Ballard of Maxwell; Miss Julia Hennessey, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Kaltenheuser and Mrs. L. R. Knapp of Nevada, Mrs. Ralph Boyle, Mrs. Carrie Ryan and Mrs. W. H. Lapp of Ames; Mr. and Mrs. Otis Davis of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Davis, of Gilman; Mrs. Chas. Kirby of Colo and Mrs. Shepherd of Ankeny.
