MRS. JOHN K. SANDSGAARD
Mrs. John K. Sandsgaard (nee Anna Janette Hustoft) was born at Haugesund, Norway, Sept. 4, 1859, and passed away at Story City, Iowa, Wednesday, June 14, 1939, at the age of 79 years, 9 months and 10 days.
As a child she was baptized in the Lutheran church at Nerstrand, Norway. In 1872, then 13 years old, she came with her parents, Jens and Ellen Hustoft, to America, and made their home in Roland, Iowa, where Mrs. Sandsgaard was confirmed by Rev. Ingvald Eisteinser.
April 21, 1877, she was united in marriage to John K. Sandsgaard. They settled down on a farm which Mr. Sandsgaard had bought six miles northwest of Story City, where they made their home until they moved to Story City in 1916.
Mrs. Sandsgaard became the mother of 11 children, of whom two died in infancy, and a daughter, Mrs. Maynard West, who passed away in 1930. Her husband died Dec. 6, 1932.
The children who survive her are John of Elmore, Minn., Mrs. Jacob Hoversten, Selmer and James all of Story City; Mrs. Joe West, Mrs. O. E. Lund, Sverdrup and Joseph of Jewell. She also leaves 28 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren and a host of friends.
While the Sandsgaards lived on the farm they were active members of the Clear Lake and Ellsworth Lutheran church, five miles west of Randall. Since they came to Story City they have been active members of the Bethel Lutheran church. Mrs. Sandsgaard was a kind wife and mother, a faithful church member and a humble Christian.
Her daughter Ella Hoversten has been staying with her mother the last few years, and gave her very good care to the last.
Funeral services were held from the home and Bethel church June 18, 1939. Rev. G. O. Paulsrud, assisted by Rev. H. Oppedal conducted the funeral. A great audience of relatives and friends were present to pay their last respects to this noble citizen. Music was furnished by Orville Olson, the Okland sisters and Mrs. Ekland. Interment was made at the local cemetery [in Story City.] Besides many floral tributes a sum of $85 were given in her memory to various institutions. Six of her grandchildren were pallbearers, namely, Ivan, Reuben and Laverne Sansgaard, Sterling Lund, Ernest Hoversten and Floyd West.
Blessed be her memory.
Among those from a distance at the funeral were the following: Mr. and Mrs. Hans P. Johnson of Grantsburg, Wis.; Sverre Lillegaard of Minneapolis; Mrs. Peter Quam and Geneva of Radcliffe; Mr. and Mrs. Otto Shayer of Marshalltown; Mrs. Arthur Grandon of Gilman; Nels Nelson and Louie of Albion; Mr. and Mrs. Milford Handeland of Marshalltown; Mr. and Mrs. John Sansgaard and Ivan of Elmore; Mr. and Mrs. Ira Christenson and Mr. and Mrs. Selid Overland of Des Moines; Mrs. Byron Holm of Webster City; Johannes Johnson of Two Harbors, Minn.
SUBMITTER'S NOTE: Anna's headstone in the Story City Cemetery gives her name as "Janette Sansgord." However, this obituary gives her name as "Mrs. John K. Sandsgaard" and most other records give her family name as "Sansgaard." I have indexed her with these variations.
