JOHN S. JOHNSON

John S. Johnson was born in Stusvik, Norway, Feb. 2, 1860. He came to America with his parents, Jon and Christ Stusvik, when he was 9 years old. They settled and lived in the Norwegian settlement in Clinton county for 5 years, when, together with his parents, he moved to Story county, where he lived almost continuously to the time of his death, which occurred Nov. 25, 1935. For a few years he resided in Wyoming, where he proved up on some government land.

His most active years were spent in farming on the old homestead about a mile east of Gilbert. The last 20 years he lived in Story City.

He was united in marriage to Nellie Tegland May 29, 1884. One son, Joseph Martin, blessed this union, but when the baby boy was one week old, his wife passed away, May 3, 1885. The little boy survived his mother one year when he too passed beyond. Thus Mr. Johnson was again left alone.

He married Rachel Mason Dec. 26, 1886. To this union 5 children were born, namely, Christian and Amos, who both died when they had grown to manhood; Mrs. Nellie Canady of Story City, Stella Adams of Nashville, Tenn., and Palmer Johnson of Chicago. The surviving children were all present at his bedside when he passed away.

In 1902 death again entered his home and took the mother of his children away from him leaving him with a houseful of young children. His mother was still living at that time and was great assistance to him.

On Jan. 1, 1917, he again entered into the bonds of matrimony with Mrs. Anna Beane, who survives him.

Mr. Johnson affiliated with the Lutheran church and was confirmed Oct. 31, 1875, by Rev. N. Amlund, pioneer minister in these parts. He was confirmed in the Roland church--that being the year that St. Petri church was undergoing repairs and being rebuilt in Story City.

He leaves to mourn his departure, besides his wife and three children: one brother, Johannes of Pipestone, Minn., six grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

His funeral was conducted from the Immanuel church, Rev. Heimarck officiating. Interment took place on the family lot in South St. Petri cemetery. The pall bearers were old time friends: Lars Omvig, L. A. Dale, Severin Brattebo, Ole Olson, Jacob S. Jacobson and Arne Travase.

Reading his life story, between the lines one may easily understand that Mr. Johnson had mor than his share of sorrows, losses and tribulations, all of which he bore uncomplainingly. All who knew him learned to like him. He always met you with a smile, and a cheerful word was always on his lips. A man of very even temperament.

Those of us who knew John S. Johnson will miss him very much, and his memory will remain with us thru life.
An Oldtime Friend.
