Lauritz Smith, 58, passed away at the Pasco hospital Wednesday night, where he had undergone a major operation on Feb. 4. His condition had been serious from the first and he had undergone several blood transfusions, and everything was done that could be, it is stated.

He was born March 11, 1876, at Story City, Iowa, and came to Genesee, Idaho, in 1880, with his parents, crossing the plains and mountains in a covered wagon. He was educated in the Idaho schools and attended the University of Idaho. He was married to Miss Josephine Tegland of Story City in 1898 and came to Kennewick in 1904 and started the home on the banks of the Columbia river which they have continued to improve for more than a quarter of a century.

In 1908 he opened a machine shop in Kennewick and in 1916 went into the garage business with Alex Bier and his brother Al Smith, and took an active interest in the business until about four years ago, when he retained interest, but returned to the farm.
