OBITUARY
E. L. Severeide [sic]
E. L. Severeide [sic] was born July 31, 1851, at lower Severeide, in Skaanevik, Norway, his parents being Lars and Ragnhild Severeide. He died at his home in Story City, Iowa, April 30, 1920, at the age of 68 years, 9 months.
He immigrated to America in 1871, coming direct to Story City on July 28 of that year. He met Magrethe Siverson of Cambridge and they were married September 25. For two years they lived near Cambridge, but after that they lived on their farm northwest of Story City until 13 years ago, when they moved from the farm to this place.
The union of Mr. and Mrs. Severeide was blessed with 12 children. Four of these (one boy and three girls) died at an early age. The wife and the following children survive him: Eddie of Wahpeton, N. D.; Charles of Invernes, Mont.; Mrs. Randie Drowe of Deering, N. D.; Osmund and Alfred of Huxley; Emelie of Eagle Grove; Joseph of Boone and Ellen of Chicago. All the children were present at the death and burial of their beloved father.
Mr. Severeide's oldest brother who lives in Norway, and one sister, Mrs. Peder Thorson of this place, also survive him. Two brothers and two sisters have preceded him in death. Twenty grandchildren survive him.
He suffered a slight stroke three years ago. While he appeared to recover from this very well still his rugged strength had been broken, so that when the second stroke came to him about ten days before his death he was not able to withstand it. After this second stroke he was unable to speak, but he appeared at times to understand what was spoken to him.
Funeral services were held in the Immanuel church Monday, May 3rd, on which occasion the pastor, Rev. Heimarck, officiated and preached the funeral sermon. Addresses were also made by Rev. L. O. Thorson of Dows, who is a nephew of the deceased, and by Rev. Peter Buland of Cambridge.
Mr. Severeide was one of the charter members of the Immanuel congregation and was from first to last an active member of the same. In the course of the years he held many positions of trust and honor in the church he loved so well, and he often represented his congregation at meetings of various sorts. He will be greatly missed by the members of his church, as well as by his loved ones in the home. May he rest in peace.
