PIONEER
William S. Johnson Died at Hospital in Marshalltown Tuesday Night
William Shaw Johnson, one of the old pioneers of this community, passed away Tuesday night at the St. Thomas hospital in Marshalltown, at which place he had made his home the past several years. The funeral services are being held today at the home, in charge of Rev. W. G. Crowder, and the remains will be brought to Gilbert for interment.
Mr. Johnson was born at Cadiz, Harrison county, Ohio, Feb. 1, 1833. As a young man he moved to Grant county, Indiana, where he was married in 1859. At the outbreak of the civil war he volunteered for service and served throughout the great struggle. At the end of the war he returned to his home in Indiana, where he lived until the fall of 1869, when he came to Story county, settling near Ames. later he moved to Story City, where he made his home until a year ago, when he moved to Marshalltown.
Mr. Johnson's first wife was Nancy Ann Jackson, who died Jan. 18, 1913. He was again married in 1916 to Harriett J. Blac, of Emmetsburg who survives him. Four sons survive in the persons of Calvin M. Johnson of Madison, S. D.; Elias C. Johnson of Griswold; and Clinton E. and Oscar A. Johnson of Gilbert. Twenty grandchildren and seventeen great grand children also survive him.
