Private Andrew E. Boyd, son of Mr. and Mrs. Erick G. Boyd, formerly of this place but not living on a farm on the Stanhope route, died at Camp Dodge at a late hour last Thursday night Oct. 10. He had been sick but a few days, first with the influenza and then with pneumonia, dying from the latter sickness.
The remains were brought to Story City Monday evening, some delay having been entailed by official red tape at the camp. The funeral was held at the cemetery Tuesday forenoon, being of a private nature according to the latest rulings of the state board of health.
Andrew Boyd was born Dec. 27, 1896, being thus at the time of his untimely demise a little less than 22 years old. He was drawn in the draft from Hamilton county Sept. 5 and assigned to Co. 53, 14th battalion, 163 depot brigade at Camp Dodge. There he acquitted himself in a soldierly manner clear up to the time of his sickness. He was busy carrying stretchers bearing victims of the influenza when he was taken down with it himself.
Andrew was a likeable young fellow. For some time he worked on the delivery wagon of the local grocery stores and thus came in contact with many of our people, all of whom had come to think highly of him.
He had taken training in an automobile school in Kansas City some time ago, and he had been advised that he could escape the draft if he so desired; but he would not. He said that he wanted to do his share in his country's war. That was his nature and it is the spirit animating the youth of our land in a marked degree.
His death has caused great grief not only to his own family, but to a wide circle of friends. But if he could speak he would say: "Mourn not as those who have no hope; I have only gone on before to take my place in the great white throng."
