Mrs. Grethe Tendeland
Mrs. Grethe Tendeland (maiden name Jacobs) was born on Hviddingso, near Stavanger, Norway, June 16, 1845. At the age of ten she emigrated with her parents to America, and first came to Illinois, but shortly after moved to Roland, Iowa. Here she grew up and was confirmed in the Lutheran church by Rev. Amlund. In 1873 she married Michael Tendeland, with whom she had three children, all living. They first lived in Marshalltown, but shortly located in Story City, where they made their home until they moved to Sioux City, where Mr. Michael Tendeland died in 1908. Since then she spent part of her time with the different children. She had her home, however, in Sioux City until last fall, when she sold it and then came to Story City, where she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Alex Henderson. With the exception of a couple of severe attacks of asthma during the winter, she was apparently in good health. Last Thursday she was as usual about the house and retired in the evening feeling well. At half-past eleven o'clock in the night she was suddenly taken with another attack of acute asthma and within an hour her end had come. Thus death came suddenly at 12:30 Friday morning, May 24th. Funeral services were held at the Bethel church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Paulsrud, assisted by Rev. Solum, conducting the services. Wednesday morning the remains were taken to Sioux City and after a short service at the St. John's Lutheran church of which she was a member, the body was interred at the Floyd cemetery, beside her husband's grave. Rev. Quello of Sioux City officiated, both at the church and at the grave.
Deceased leaves to mourn her departure the three children, Mrs. Mabel Henderson, Story City, Ia.; Julius Tendeland, Hitchcock, S. D.; and Mrs. Lillie Jacobson of Redfield, S. D. Also 3 full brothers and 1 full sister, and 2 half sisters and one half brother, six grand children and other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Tendeland had committed her soul to God, firmly confiding in His grace revealed in Jesus Christ. The Bible was the one book she loved, and was taken into daily use. The last audible prayer that was heard to pass over her lips was the twenty-third Psalm, "The Lord is My Shepherd I shall not want." This is now of comforting thought that the Good Shepherd has also taken her weary soul home to His heavenly fold.
