AUTO CAUSES DEATH

Alfred Overland Meets With Untimely End in Sad Accident.

The sad news was flashed over the wires Sunday night that Alfred Overland, son of Mrs. Dena Overland, had been run over and killed by an automobile in Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon.

It appears that he was riding on a bicycle and met the automobile bein driven by George Earling, a son of the president of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Ry.

In the effort to avoid each other both turned to the same side, with the result that the automobile struck the bicycle with such force that Alfred was thrown violently to the ground. Mr. Earling at once went to his aid, but found that he was unconscious. Mr. Earling then picked him up, and, taking him in his machine, drove as rapidly as possible to a hotel at Nashotah, where medical aid was summoned. It was found the skull was fractured and a rib broken, and the young man never regained consciousness, dying on Sunday afternoon, just 24 hours after the accident.

Soon after the accident President Earling came over from his summer home and directed that everything possible should be done for the injured man. Dr. H. M. Brown of Milwaukee was called and a special train which made a record run, was ordered by President Earling. In spite of all that could be done the young man died. Mr. Earling and wife were prostrated over the accident. Mr. Earling after bringing the injured man to the hotel fainted.

Alfred was a young man, 20 years of age, of exemplary habits, and one of Mr. Overland's three sons. He went to Nashota, Wis., several months ago and was getting along nicely with a good position when this sad accident put an end to his career.

The remains were brought to Story City Tuesday morning by the elder brother, Joseph, who had been summoned from Taylorville, Ill. Funeral services were held from the Bethel church yesterday afternoon, Rev. Paulsrud officiating. A large concourse of people showed sympathy with the bereaved family, the church being crowded to the doors, and the casket was covered with a profusion of flowers.
