H. C. W. HEERS LAID TO REST YESTERDAY
DEATH CAME MONDAY AFTERNOON, AFTER ILLNESS OF TWO YEARS
H. C. W. Heers died at his home on upper Broad street Monday afternoon, a little before three o'clock. He had been in failing health for several years, but had been able to be up and around a little most of the time except the last two months. During all this time he suffered patiently, and when the end came he was reconciled to heed the call of his Master.
OBITUARY
Mr. H. C. W. Heers was born in Bardsfeldt, Germany, Feb. 15, 1833; died August 19, 1912, at his home in Story City, Iowa, aged 79 years, six months and four days. His last illness was of about two years standing, and its termination was welcomed by the deceased.
After completing his apprenticeship as a cabinet maker Mr. Heers came to America by sail boat in the spring of 1854, arriving in New York some time in May. After remaining a short time there, he went to Brownsville, Pennsylvania, where he met old country friends and received employment as a designer in a threshing machine factory. As yet he could not speak a word of English, but by diligent application he succeeded in mastering the language quite well.
Getting the western fever he cam in the spring of 1856 to Des Moines, which was then only a fort. Here he worked at his trade most of the time till the spring of 1884. Here, also, he was married to Christina Karcher in 1858 and three boys and one girl blessed this union. In 1884 they located on a farm a few miles west of Story City. Mrs. Christina Heers and the two younger children preceded him to the heavenly home.
November fifth, 1891, he was united in marriage with Alice Ingram; continuing on the farm until the autumn of 1902, when they moved to Story City, where they have since resided.
Believing in the God of his fathers, he was confirmed at the age of fourteen, in the Lutheran Church, and always lived an upright and conscientious life. There remain to mourn his departure his wife, two sons, and a sister.
Gone to the dreamless bed
Where grief reposes,
Thy book of toil is read
