From The Roland Record, Roland, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, November 8, 1923.

YOUNG WOMAN CALLED BY DEATH

Sudden Death Called Mrs. E. N. Waugh, Young Wife and Mother, Last Sunday Morning. Funeral Services Yesterday.

This community was shocked last Sunday morning, when it learned that Mrs. Erick N. Waugh had passed away that morning after a few hours illness with kidney poisoning. Mrs. Waugh had been in her usual health and attended to her household duties until Saturday night. Mr. Waugh had gone to town in the evening to make some purchases and was about to leave for home, when Mrs. Waugh called for him to come home as she did not feel well. Her brother, Dr. R. R. Gaard of Radcliffe was called and later in the night, Dr. J. A. Snyder of this place was called and everything that was humanly possible, was done to save her life, but as stated above she passed away at eight o'clock Sunday morning, November 4, 1923, at the age of nearly thirty three years.

Amy Gaard was born in Roland, November 15, 1890, and was the youngest daughter of Mr. And Mrs. R. K. Gaard, pioneer residents of Roland, who pssed away several years ago. On November 26, 1914 she was united in marriage to Mr. Erick N. Waugh, to which union two children were born, Betty Altan and Erick Gaard, who are yet too young to realize the irreparable loss that they have sustained. Besides her husband and two children, she leaves a sister, Mrs. Clara Thompson, of this place, two brothers, Dr. R. R. Gaard of Radcliffe, and Homer Gaard of Blue Earth, Minn., and a number of other relatives together with hosts of loving friends to mourn her untimely death. Her mother passed away about twenty two years ago and her father twelve years ago, and two sisters, Guvine and Mattie and an infant brother have preceded her to the Heavenly Home.

The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the home after which services were conducted at Salem Lutheran Church, the funeral being in charge of Rev. J. N. Sandven and Rev. M. O. Sumstad. The floral offerings were many and very beautiful. The church was filled to overflowing with the many friends who had assembled to pay their last tribute to the one they loved. Interment took place in the Roland cemetery.

Those from a distance who attended the funeral of Mrs. Waugh were: Mrs. S. Gronvold and two grandchildren of Winthrop, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Gronvold of Iowa Falls, T. A. Gaard, Miss Dora Gaard and Mrs. Lewis Larson all of Elmore, Minn., and Mr. and Mrs. Homer Gaard of Blue Earth, Minn.
