Soren V. Kalsem
Mr. Soren V. Kalsem was born at Nestrand, near Stavanger, Norway, August 14, 1836. He immigrated to America in 1857, and at first made his home in Salem, Ill. In 1861 he was united in marriage to Miss Serina G. Strom, making their home in New Sharon, Iowa. To this union nine children were born, four of whom preceded him in death, as has also his wife.
Mr. Kalsem was among the first to respond to the call for volunteers, and in 1863 he enlisted in Company C, seventh Iowa volunteer Infantry and served to the end of the war. He took part in many of the notable battles and his service. In 1875 he came to Story county where he engaged in farming until 1898 when he moved to Ames.
Mr. Kalsem was a sincere Christian. He belonged to the M. E. church at Ames. He died at his home April 8th, 1926, aged 89 years, 7 months and 24 days.
He leaves to mourn his departure his children: G. Kalsem, Marshalltown; Silas of Woodline; Philip and Albert Kalsem and Cora Teigland of Ames and 8 grandchildren and 9 greatgrandchildren.
