PASSING OF ONE MORE VETERAN

William Crouthamel Died at His Home Southwest of Town Last Saturday

William Crouthamel, one of the last of the civil war veterans of Lafayette township, died at his home, seven miles southwest of Story City, last Saturday morning at the ripe age of 86 years, 5 months and 31 days.

Funeral services were held in the Gilbert church Tuesday afternoon, conducted by his former pastor, Rev. H. M. Raecker of Abbott, assisted by Rev. Harry Kitson of the Zenorsville Evangelical church.

Mr. Crouthamel was born Sept. 6, 1839, in Bucks county, Pa. At the age of 22 he was drafted into the army and served for nine months or the balance of the war.

In company with his parents he moved to Illinois, and a year later they came to Boone county, Iowa, and five years later moved to the place in Lafayette township that has so long been his home.

In 1879 he was married to Emma Serf. To this union seven children were born, two of whom died in infancy. His wife passed to the better land Jan. 4, 1905. The surviving children are: Harriet Crouthamel of Ames; Charles and Ottie, living near Gilbert; Roy of Webster City, and Howard of Boone; also six grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Mr. Crouthamel had been a member of the Evangelical church for fifty years. His health had been uniformly good, but recently his great age had begun to tell on him and he failed quickly towards the end. He had always been a liberal contributor to the church and its charitable objects and in his departure he leaves a wide circle of old time friends to mourn his death.

The Gilbert quartet sang several songs at the funeral and the Legion furnished an escort. Interment was in the Gilbert cemetery, beside his departed wife.
