Obituary

Mrs. Andrew Peterson

Mrs. Andrew Peterson (maiden name Kersten Jorgenson) was born in Denmark Nov. 10, 1849, and died at the home of her son, Lewis Peterson, northwest of Story City, Friday morning, June 22, 1923, at the age of 73 years, 7 months and 12 days.

She came to America in 1872, and was married to Andrew Peterson in 1876 in Marshalltown, Iowa. The following year they moved to the farm northwest of Story City which remained their home until the spring of 1905, when they retired and moved into town.

Six children were born to her, namely, Hans Peterson of Niagara, N. D.; Mrs. Mary Nelson of Terrill, Iowa; Lewis A. Peterson, Pete Peterson, Mrs. L. P. (Anna) Anderson and Mrs. Henry (Minnie) West, of this place. Her husband died Feb. 7, 1918. She is survived by her six children and by eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

It was during the last days of her husband that it was noticed that Mrs. Peterson had begun to fail. Her physical breakdown was at first mostly a failing of her mental powers and for several years she gradually lost the use of the faculties of her mind. For some weeks it was evident she was getting worse and the fore part of last week unmistakable signs showed the end was near, and so it came that at an early hour last Friday morning she fell asleep in the sleep that knows no waking until the Lord shall call his chosen ones home.

Funeral services were held Monday, first at the Lewis Peterson home and than in the St. Petri church, Rev. Andersen officiating. The pastor spoke in English from the text: "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord; they shall rest from their labors and their works do follow them," and also spoke in Norwegian from the words, "The Lord gave, the Lord took away; blessed be the name of the Lord."

Mrs. Lester Henderson sang "Shall We Meet Beyond the River," and the choir followed with "Abide with Me."

The pall bearers were: Nels Larson, N. M. Nelson, Hans S. Nelson, Chas. Reischauer, Mathias Johnson and Walter Nelson.

Weep not her toils are over,
Weep not that her race is run,
God grant that we may rest as calmly
When our work, like hers, is done.
Till then we yield with gladness,
Our mother to Him to keep,
And rejoice in the sweet assurance,
He giveth His loved one sleep.
