MRS. WEST CAME TO HAMILTON CO. IN 1876
Mrs. Martha Elizabeth West, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Erickson, was born at Haukaas near Haugesund, Norway, March 19, 1852, and died at Story City January 7th, 1933, being 80 years, 9 months and 19 days old.
At the age of 17 years she came to America and settled at New Sharon, where she was engaged in domestic work for some time.
In 1876 she was united in marriage to Mr. Thos. West. Following their marriage she and her husband moved to Hamilton county, residing on their farm west of Story City until the year 1906 when they moved to South Dakota. After the death of her husband Mrs. West moved to Jewell, where she resided for a year, after which she came to Story City where she lived since.
Mrs. West became the mother of of ten children, two of whom have preceded her in death, namely Maynard West and A. G. Satre. Those who survive and now mourn a dear mother's departure are: Mrs. Dedrick Munson, Story City; Thomas West, Nerstrand, Minn.; Henry West, Story City; Mrs. G. S. Olson, Jewell; Mrs. M. J. Teig, Stanhope; Mrs. S. B. Teig, Nerstrand, Minn.; Joseph West and Elsie West, Story City. She also leaves 15 grand children and three great grand children; also two sisters and a brother: Mrs. Stena Olson, Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Ole Olson, Kirman, and Henry Erickson, Los Angeles, Cal.
Mrs. West suffered a paralytic stroke seven years ago. Since then she has been bedfast and entirely helpless. During this sickness she suffered a great deal of nervous pain and she required a great deal of attention and care, and it must be said that her dear ones spared no time and labor to make her life as comfortable as possible.
Mrs. West was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and the Lutheran church was her church-home thruout her entire life. However, during her long illness, she was brought closer to her Lord and Savior, and she often expressed the which and prayer that the lord would release her and bring her to His eternal home where suffering and pain are unknown.
Mrs. West was buried Jan. 10, 1933, from Bethel church, Story City, where her pastor, Rev. G. O. Paulsrud, officiated, and where a great many of her friends and neighbors were present to bid her their last farewell. She was laid to rest beside her husband in the Jewell cemetery.
The pall bearers were the grand children of the deceased, namely: Harold and Ernest Munson, Mervin Teig, Truman, Moral and Alfred West.
Those who came from a distance to the funeral were: A. G. Satre of Kenyon, Minn., Mrs. Stena Olson of Chicago, and Thomas West and Mrs. S. B. Teig of Nerstrand, Minn.
