Lars Hougland, World War I Vet, Laid to Rest

Funeral services for Lars O. Hougland, broth of Hans and R. L. Hougland and Mrs. Lars Tesdall of this city, were held in the Immanuel church, Friday, April 12, Rev. Samuel Carlsen officiating. He was laid to rest at the Story City cemetery with military honors. Pall bearers were Atty Olaf Larson, Stanton James, Dr. E. E. Langland, Richard Munsen, Dr. A. H. Lekwa and Robert Hermanson. Mrs. Benjamin Anderson and Mrs. Arvie Jacobson sang two selections at the church.

The American Legion post took part in the funeral and the ritual at the grave.

Lars O. Hougland was born in Story City April 6, 1891, a son of Abel and Joren Hougland. He was baptized in St. Petri Lutheran church, and confirmed at Badger, Iowa by the late Rev. O. B. Shefveland.

He served in the United States army during the first World War. April 12, 1918, he was married to Miss Hazel Lemon. They lived for a few years on a farm near Roland. 17 years ago they moved to Des Moines. For the last 14 years he was employed by the Lake Shore Tire and Rubber Company.

April 7th he became critically ill with a heart attack, and he passed away at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines on April 9.

He is survived by 3 children, Glen Hougland, Mrs. Josephine Harter and Miss Louetta Hougland, by his widow, and five grandchildren. Also three brothers and two sisters survive him. They are Mrs Lars Tesdall, Hans Hougland, and R. L. Hougland of this place, Abel J. Hougland of Pequot, Minn., and Mrs. Carl Hauge of Leland, Iowa.
