Irene Brooks Neglia, 88, of Solon, formerly of Maxwell, died of natural causes Sunday morning, Oct. 2, 2005, at the Solon Nursing Care Center. Funeral services will be today, Thursday, Oct. 13, at 11 a.m., at the Maxwell United Methodist Church with Rev. Dean Kelly officiating. Burial will be at the Maxwell Cemetery.
Irene was born on April 1, 1917, in Clinton, Tenn., to Harve and Myrtle Brooks. She graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens, Tenn. After college, Irene moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked and met F. J. Neglia. They were married in Wilmington, Del., in 1941 and moved to Maxwell in 1946 where Dr. Neglia established a medical practice. Irene moved to Solon in February of 2002.
Irene was a member of the Maxwell United Methodist Church for 59 years. She enjoyed church and was a member of the Women's Auxiliary. Irene was instrumental in starting the Maxwell Historical Society in 1964, and served as treasurer for many years. She was also a member of the Maxwell Women's Club.
Irene loved life and was a devoted and dedicated wife and mother to her family. Her activities included decorating, gardening, reading, sewing, fishing and traveling.
Survivors include her two daughters, Mary Sunday Antrim, of Solon, and Angela Irene Kabala, of Ames; five grandchildren, Susan Swartz, of San Francisco, Alicia Antrim, of Chicago, Sarah Kabala, David Kabala, and Anthony Kabala, all of Ames; and two brothers, Robert Brooks and Howard Brooks, of Tennessee.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Dr. F. J. Neglia, and her sister, Ruth Heidle, of Tennessee.
Irene will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Memorials may be made to the Maxwell Area Museum and the Maxwell United Methodist Church.
The Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell is handling arrangements.
