THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, October 12, 2005.

Mary Kay Thoreson, 84, of Ellsworth, died Sunday, Oct. 9, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellsworth. Burial will be in Homewood Cemetery in Ellsworth. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the Fellowship Hall of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellsworth.

Mary Kathryn Ricketts was born June 19, 1921, in Zearing, the seventh child of Dr. Robert A. and Nellie (Jones) Ricketts. She graduated from Zearing High School and attended Hunts Business College in Marshalltown. She married Lt. Weston F. Melson Jan. 30, 1944; he was killed on his third mission over Germany in World War II. She married Wesley G. Thoreson Oct. 17, 1948, at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Des Moines. She worked at the Minneapolis Star-Tribune and Standard Oil main office in Des Moines before she and her husband purchased Thoreson Hardware and moved to Ellsworth. The hardware store was sold, and she then was bookkeeper for the Ellsworth Telephone Company for 17 years until she retired. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellsworth, PEO, Advance Club and numerous bridge clubs.

She is survived by one son, Wes J. Thoreson (Patty) of Ellsworth; one daughter, Jennifer Williams (Paul) of Story City; four grandchildren, Ryan Thoreson (Deann), Ross Thoreson (Christie), and Kirk and Meredith Williams; four great-grandchildren, Emma. Else, and Reece Thoreson, and Caden Thoreson; three sisters, Jeanette Allison and Maxine Britten of Marshalltown, and Ilene Womeldorff of Stewartville, Minn.; and one brother, Wayne Ricketts of Champaign, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; and four brothers, Carroll, Bob, Max, and Don.

Becker Funeral Home in Jewell is in charge of arrangements.
