Services Held for John Apland, 69

Funeral services for Johnnie Apland, 69, former Cambridge man, were held Monday afternoon at the Riis Funeral Home. Mr. Apland died May 30 at Staten Island, N. Y.

The Rev. Henry Fle---er of Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cambridge officiated at the services. The organist, Mrs. Lou Miler, accompanied Mrs. Alec Egeland and Mrs. Donald Ryerson as they sang a duet.

Pallbearers were Kermit Freeland, Eldon Freeland, Donald Apland, Wallace Vespestad, Richard Apland and Lyle Chader. Interment was in Palestine Cemetery near Huxley.

Obituary

John Alfred Apland was born near Cambridge, Ia. Sept. 19, 1898 and passed away May 30, 1968 at the Veterans Hospital in Staten Island, N. Y.

He was confirmed and a member of the Palestine Church until he moved away from Iowa to New York where he was a member of the Merchant Marines for over 40 years and as chief engineer for merchant liners for many years, before he retired and moved to Snug Harbor in Staten Island, a retirement home of the Merchant Marines. He served his country as a Lieutenant in World War II.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Knute and Tomena Apland, one sister, Mrs. Anna Freeland of Cambridge, four brothers, Reuben of Alsen, N. D., Clarence of Patterson, Calif., Tilden of Cambridge and Fred of Chicago, Ill.

He is survived by one brother, Joseph of Caldwell, Ida., three sisters, Mrs. Clara Knutson of Kansas City, Mo., Amelia Lewis and Mrs. Edith Vespestad of Cambridge and many other relatives and friends.
