Funeral Services Held for Rev. Hiram E. Jacobson

Funeral services for Rev. Hiram E. Jacobson were held Saturday afternoon, Apr. 30 at 1:30 p.m. in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Pastor Jacobson passed away Wednesday, Apr. 27 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines after a long illness.

Clergymen officiating were Rev. John Ness, Rev. Ernest Thompson of Palestine Church near Huxley and Rev. Wm. Adix of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny.

Mrs. Dale Wheeler was the organist and the soloists were Nilus Ihle and Robert Weeks.

Pallbearers were Harold Skarshaug, Paul Jones, Edward Skarshaug, James Omvig, Paul Skarshaug and James Lehmkuhl.

Interment was in Palestine Cemetery near Huxley.

Obituary

Hiram Edward Jacobson was born at Clermont, Ia. on Nov. 12, 1900. His parents were John and Julie (Skarshaug) Jacobson. He was baptized by Dr. Jacob Tanner at Clermont on Dec. 2, 1900. He was confirmed by Pastor Nels Arveson on May 17, 1914 at Norway Lutheran Church near St. Olaf, Ia. He grew up at St. Olaf and graduated in 1920 from high school at Elkader, Ia. He graduated from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn., in 1926 and from Luther Theological Seminary, St. Paul, Minn., in 1928.

Pastor Jacobson was ordained into the Lutheran ministry by Dr. J. A. Aasgaard on June 3, 1928. He was united in marriage to Miss Marjorie Peterson at Bergen Lutheran Church, Roland, Ia., on June 14, 1928.

To this union was born one son, Lt. Paul Joseph Jacobson who has been missing in action as a jet fighter pilot in North Korea since Feb. 12, 1953. Apr. 30th was Paul's birthday.

Pastor and Mrs. Jacobson have served in the following parishes.

Landstad Lutheran Church, Rose Grove Lutheran Church and St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Williams, Ia., 1928-1939.

Palestine Lutheran Church, Huxley and Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cambridge 1939-1949.

Shiloh Lutheran Church and Pilot Grove Lutheran Church, Elmore, Minn., 1949-1958.

Calvary Lutheran Church, Lee, Ill., 1958-1968.

After 40 years of active ministry the Jacobsons retired and moved to Slater in August 1968, becoming members of Bethlehem congregation. He has frequently been a guest pastor and for nine months was an interim pastor of Salem Lutheran Church, Radcliffe, Ia. and Stavanger Lutheran Church, Garden City, Ia.

Pastor Jacobson passed away on Wednesday, Apr. 27 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, following a long lingering illness at the age of 76 years.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; a sister, Grace Lehmkuhl of Cedar Rapids and two brothers, Clarence of Rudd, Ia. and Lewis of Mason City.
