From The Slater News January 18, 1917

REACHED AN ADVANCED AGE

The funeral over the remains of late Mrs. Christene Nelson Morrison took place last Sunday from the Bethlehem church at 2:30 in the afternoon. The services were in charge of her pastor, Rev. Peterson, assisted by Rev. Wee, the former giving a discourse in the Norwegian tongue and the latter in English. A large crowd was in attendance and the church was well filled. Burial was made in the Bethlehem cemetery.

Both of the pastors spoke beautifully of the life that had ended in the death of the aged woman on the 9th and the impressive services had their climax when Soren, her only living son, arose at the conclusion of the addresses and gave a glowing tribute to the memory of his departed mother. It was a fitting capsheaf to a long life, lived in communion with the lowly Nazarene. Soren was just recovering from a two weeks' illness with pneumonia and was very weak but suffered no ill results from the extraordinary exertion and continues to improve.

Mrs. Nelson Morrison was born in the fall of 1832 of Sandve, Norway. She was married in the early sixties. Her husband [Maurits Mauritsen Furenes] passed away as did two of the children [Iver Mauritsen Furenes and Samuel Mauritsen Furenes]. In 1883 she and her son, Martin, came to America, to join the older brother, Soren, who had preceded them to this country the year before. They came to Cambridge, Iowa, and made their temporary home with Tobias Severtson. In 1884 she was again married, her husband being Erick Nelson [Erik Nilson/Nilsson] and they made their home on a farm northwest of town until 1902 when she was called to mourn his death. The following year, 1903, she and Soren moved to Slater, where she continued to reside till death called her away last week at an age of eighty-four years. She is mourned by a son, Soren, and a sister in Norway.

Neighbors and friends will remember Mrs. Morrison as a vey devoted Christian mother and a kind neighbor with a cheerful, sunny disposition. Many beautiful floral tributes were hers during her short illness and a the last sad rites.

SUBMITTER'S NOTE: Kristina/Christina (Thorson/Thorsen) Morrison is very confusing. First, her first husband was apparently Maurits Mauritsen Furenes but she carried the surname Morrison as did her son, Soren. Her marriage to Erik Nilson occurred in Story County, Iowa 8 January 1884. That record lists her as Christina Morreson nee Thorson. In Ancestry her father is listed as Soren Thorsen. The second point of confusion is her date of birth. Her headstone in the Bethlehem Cemetery, Story County, Iowa lists her as Kristina Morrison born 1859, died 1917. The above obituary states she was born in the fall of 1832 (which I am more inclined to believe as does Ancestry.) The 1910 Story County, Iowa census lists her as age 77.
