Miss Pearl Apland Passes Away at 69
Miss Pearl Apland, 69, formerly of Ames and Story County, died in Indianapolis, Inc., Dec. 1, following more than 2 1/2 years of radium, cobalt and other treatment for cancer.
Miss Apland was born on a farm northeast of Slater on Oct. 30, 1896, to Anfin and Bertha Marie Apland, and later lived in Cambridge and Huxley, moving to Ames with her family in 1915.
She graduated from Ames High School in 1916 and from Iowa State University in 1921. She taught household art and applied art in the Home Economics Department at Iowa State University and was assistant to the dean of home economics.
She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, the Geneva Club, the Y. W. C. A. Executive Council, and served as president of the Mortar Board and of the Quill Literary Club. She was also a president of the Luther League of the Bethesda Lutheran Church.
In the fall of 1924, Miss Apland started teaching applied art, art appreciation and clothing and costume design at Arsenal Technical Schools in Indianapolis. Arsenal Technical Schools have at times had over 7,000 students, and they have a 76-acre campus.
Miss Apland retired in June, 1962.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Lola Doris. She is survived by her brother, L. LeRoy Apland, of Ames.
She was baptized in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater.
Funeral services for Pearl were held at the Flanner & Buchanan Fall Creek Mortuary in Indianapolis, Ind. on Dec. 3.
The body was to be cremated and interment will be at the Bethesda Lutheran Cemetery*. It still is not known when the remains will reach Iowa, so arrangements for interment have not been made.
*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: According to cemetery records, she is buried at Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery at Slater, Story County, Iowa. She shares a headstone with her mother, Bertha M. Urdahl Apland, as well as her brother and sister, W. LeRoy Apland and Lola Doris Apland.
