Obituary of Elick Peterson
Elick Peterson, son of Swen and Margarita Peterson, was born near Biggsville, Illinois, November 13, 1859. He came with his parents to Iowa in 1867. They made Des Moines their home for some time, later moving to Sheldahl. He early became interested in the mercantile business and worked at intervals in Oley Nelson's general store at Sheldahl. He also worked as a traveling salesman and did well. When the town of Slater was established he saw the possibility of it being developed into a trading place and was one of the first to buy and business lot, choosing the corner where the bank is located.
A few years later he located there. A new school house being erected at the time, he purchased the then one room building, which he converted into a store, which became is place of business for many years. Later he took in a partner and the firm became known as Peterson & Croft. The combination made a good team and they did well. Later Mr. Croft sold his interests, but Mr. Peterson continued the business alone for several years, when he sold out. He bought a farm near Dows, where they resided for a few years. Since 1929 he and his wife had made their home at Alden and it was at Alden that he passed away Saturday morning.
Mr. Peterson was married to Ida V. Snider at Sheldahl on September 12, 1883. To this union were born six children, two of whom, Bonnie and Mina, died in childhood. He is survived by his widow and four children. They are Chester A. Peterson of Miami, Florida; Mrs. I. S. Burton of Eddyville, Mrs. H. O. Tiedje of Alden and Miss Marguerite V. Peterson of New York City and two grandchildren, Phyllis and Stanley Burton. All were present at the last rites except Chester, who was home only recently.
Mr. Peterson was confirmed in the Swedish Lutheran church, but later on became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, of which he was an active, faithful member until death claimed him. In Slater, as well as in the other communities where he resided, his integrity, high standard of character and amiable disposition won for him a large circle of friends, friends who with his family are today mourning his loss.
During his long, active career Mr. Peterson had enjoyed the best of health. During the past two years, however, it had not been the best, though at no time alarming till several weeks ago when he became confined to the bed. He passed on at the age of 71 years, 7 months and 7 days.
