Military Services For Jesse Cole

Jesse Cole, former resident, who passed away Oct. 9 in Washington, Inc., from a heart attack, was laid to rest Sunday with full military honors. His son, Virgil, went from California to Indiana by plane and accompanied the remains to Slater.

Funeral services were held at the home of his brother, Roy Cole, at 2:30 and from the Slater Methodist church at 3:00. Services had been held in Washington, Ind., on Saturday. His siter attended the services there and was unable to make the trip to Slater.

At the church, Homer Lewis sang "The Old Rugged Cross," a favorite of Mr. Cole. Mrs. M. S. Heggen and Mrs. A. L. Peterson sang "Beautiful Garden of Prayer." They sang this song at the funeral of his wife. Mrs. Harold Croft presided at the piano.

Rev. J. H. Krenmyre officiated and chose John 14:1-4 as his text.

There were many beautiful floral tributes and gifts to missions in his memory. The casket was covered with a United States flag which was presented to his son, Virgil, by Clifford Swanson.

Pallbearers were A. L. Peterson, R. G. Nott, H. W. Marshall, W. B. McBride, M. S. Heggen and Bert Sutter, Andrew Estrem arranged the flowers.

Menbers of the American Legion who took part in the services were: Color bearer, Homer Lewis; color guards, Glen Peterson and Nilus Ihle; firing squad, Arthur Nelson, Jr., Kingsley Schaudt, Wm. Schaudt, Jr., David Louks, Rodney Sutter, Ross Daggett and Marvin Tweedt; commander, Clifford Swanson. Taps were sounded by Nettie Hammond.

Burial was in the Slater cemetary by his wife, Emma.

Jesse A. Cole, son of George and Hattie Cole, was born Dec. 21, 1893, near Cliffordsville, Ind. He spent the early part of his life in Indiana and came to Iowa in 1911. He worked on a farm near Jewell until the spring of 1917 when he came to Iowa in 1911. He worked on a farm near Jewell until the spring of 1917 when he came to Slater where he and his brother, Roy, operated a restaurant. In the spring of 1918 he was united in marriage to Emma Van Gundy, daughter of William and Paulina Van Gundy. To this union was born a son, Virgil.

Jesse Cole was baptized in the Methodist church at Slater. In July, 1918, he entered the U. S. armed forces and was honorably discharged in December, 1918.

In 1922 he moved to Nevada and later to Boone where his wife passed away in February, 1930. Following the death of his wife, he spent the remainder of this life employed at restaurant work in various places.

During World War II he was employed at the Veterans hospital in Los Angeles, Calif. In April, 1946, he went to Washington, Ind., to be near his sister where he passed away Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 2:30 p. m., from a heart attack.

He is survived by his son, Virgil, and daughter-in-law of Burbank, Calif.; two brothers, Roy of Slater and Edgar of LeMars, Ia., and a sister, Nellie, (Mrs. Owen Parsons) of Loogootie, Ind.; also a half-brother and half-sister, other relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

He was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge for a number of years and was a charter member of the Slater post of the American Legion.

Relatives and friends from distance who attended the funeral were: Virgil Cole of Burbank, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Cole of Le Mars, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. William Fudge, Mrs. Bertha Robinson and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Cooper of Nevada; Wayne Cole of Bedford; Mr. and Mrs. George Cole, Juantia and John of Jewell; Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Soderstrom and Karen of Madrid; Mr. and Mrs. K. J. Granseth of Ames, and Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Neslund of Des Moines. Mrs. Virgil Cole was unable to attend on account of the illness of her mother.
