CALLED AT AN AGE OF 77 YEARS

Even [sic] Walker, whose serious illness was mentioned in these columns last week died early Saturday morning as the result of a stroke of paralysis which he had early Monday morning, the 12th. While his condition during the few days was serious he was somewhat better on Thursday and those at his bedside became much encouraged that he might survive. However, the rally was only for a short time and in the afternoon of the same day he became much worse and continued to fail till early Saturday morning when he breathed his last. Funeral took place Monday afternoon from his late home at one o'clock and the Lincoln church at two where his pastor, Rev. Wee had charge of the services, speaking in the Norwegian language. He was assisted by Rev. Nilsen who addressed the assembled congregation in the English language. Though it rained at the time of the services there was a large crowd in attendance many coming from some distance. Burial was made in the Bethlehem cemetery.

Even Walker was born at Osvaag, Etne, Norway, in 1836. He grew in manhood in the land of his birth where he was also married in 1860. In the year of 1870 he bade his native land adieu and came to America, taking up his residence in the community south east of town where he later had a farm and where he resided till a few years ago when he moved to town. He was the father of eight children, six sons and a daughter. The remaining ones, Andrew, Lewis and John of Wright county, Amos of this place and Mrs. Berg of Eagle Grove, were present at the funeral last Monday. He is also survived by his life companion as well as a host of other relatives and friends here and elsewhere.

Deceased, having made this community his home from the time he chose to cast his lot in America, he is well known to our readers. Though penniless at the time he arrived on Iowa soil he was possessed of two willing hands and set about in establishing a home that he could call his own. He was energetic, honest and full of thrift and his work progressed and he attained a handsome competence. He was a member of the Lincoln congregation where he was a faithful attendant at all church services.
