“DIED – Sept. 14rh, 1894, at the residence of her son, John Lanning, in Ames, Iowa, Mrs. Lana Lanning, aged eighty seven years, six months and eight days. Lana Wilson was born in North Carolina, March 6th 1807. In 1814 she went with her parents to Indiana and in 1829 was married to Lewis Lanning. In 1843 Mr. Lanning with his family moved to Iowa and settled near Koszta, Iowa County, where they lived until his death which occurred in 1869, they having lived together forty years. They had eleven children, six sons and five daughters of whom two sons and four daughters are still living to mourn her loss. At the age of twelve she joined the M. E. church, thus having been a member over three fourths of a century. For want of church the M. E. pastors often held services in the Lanning home where they always received a warm welcome. In February 1876 Grandma Lanning went suddenly blind from paralysis of the optic nerve. Since that time she has made her home with her children. She was most patient, under her affliction, endearing herself to all by her uncomplaining gentleness. After appropriate services at the house the remains were taken to Koszta for burial beside the graves of her husband and children. Services were conducted by Rev. Everly of Ames who also accompanied the friends to Koszta and conducted services in the church at that place. “You have gone from our home, dear old friend, We have given you a last farewell. You have met with the loved ones gone before Where the good and the true ever dwell.” E. G. L.”
