Mrs. Matilda Emeline Vanscoy
Mrs. Matilda Emeline Vanscoy (nee Sherman) was born near Grandville, Ill., Aug. 29, 1860, died at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines, March 14, 1904. Her early life was spent near the place of her birth and came to Ames in May, 1883. She married James Vanscoy at Paxton, Illinois in 1876. By this union there were nine children, six boys and three girls. Two boys preceded her to their reward, being drowned in 1901. She united with the U. B. church, Dec. 1896. For months she has been deprived of church privileges on account of poor health and when she was nearing the point in her sickness where an operation became necessary she recognized the fact that naught but the grace of God was able to sustain her in the hours of her extremity. After prayers by herself and advice from her pastor, she became reconciled, her only concern being that of a mothers love for her family. After the operation and before her demise she often expressed her trust in God and the gladness of her heart, that reconciliation had been made and that so far as the future was concerned, all was well. Those present at the time of her death were her husband and son James. She died at 7:45 p.m. Monday March 14, 1904 and the remains were brought to the family residence in Ames the morning of the 15th. Services were conducted by the U. B. church by her pastor, Rev. O. L. Wilson, and the interment was made at the Ames cemetery, March 16, 1904.
