Mrs. Mary Vernon

Mrs. Mary Ann Vernon was born in Indiana September 21, 1829 and died at the home of her son George R. Vernon in this city March 4, 1904, aged 74 years, 9 months and 14 days. Miss Mary Ann Ratcliffe was united in marriage to Mr. Vernon Feb. 22, 1860 in the Bangor, Marshall county, Friends church according to the friends creed. Unto them were born four children, George R., John J., Lindley and Anna J. George Vernon resides in this city, John J. at Messilia, New Mexico, being professor of horticulture in New Mexico Agricultural college. Lindley died at the age of three years and Anna J. Vernon died in Marshalltown January 31st of this year. Anna had been operated on at the Marshalltown hospital and never recovered. Her mother never recovered from the shock of her daughter's death and she only survived her daughter one month. Only two sons and six grand children are left to mourn the loss. Her home was in Bangor where she had resided since the death of her husband eleven years ago but after the death of her daughter she came to the home of her son in this city. She was very patient in here last sickness and seemed to wait the hour when she should be called to join her departed husband and children. A short funeral service was held Saturday forenoon at the house by Rev. Ferrall and the real service at the Friends church in Bangor in the afternoon by Rev. Pluppett after which the interment was made in the Bangor cemetery. Mrs. Vernon had been in Ames but a short time and had made only a few friends but those know what a faithful mother and true friend was the departed.
