COOPER, JOHN R. (1827–1891)
THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday. April 12, 1894, page 4.
“OBITUARY – John R. Cooper was born in England Oct. 13, 1827, and died at his home in Maxwell, Iowa, April 6, 1891, aged 66 years, five months and 23 days. He came with his parents to America when but three years old. He was the oldest of a family of eight children, four brothers and four sisters and is the first to pass away. One of his sisters, Mrs. Lucy Landreth, of Ringgold county, Iowa, has been with and helped to care for him during most of his sickness. He was married to Rebecca Ann Stark in the year 1850, and was the father of six children, four boys and two girls, all of whom are grown, and have homes of their own. The four boys live in Maxwell, and the two girls in Kansas. One of the daughters, Mrs. Recena(?) Johnson, was here several weeks and helped to care for her father during the winter, but returned to her home some time ago. His faithful wife, though very feeble herself, has been continually at his side doing all that loving and willing hands could do to comfort and sustain him during his long sickness. He has been a great sufferer since the 30th of last November, until death came to his relief. He was always a kind husband, a loving and affectionate father, a sincere Christian, a faithful member of the Baptist church, and died with his faith firmly fixed on a Blessed Immortality beyond the grave. His life and works are worthy of imitation, and his memory will long be cherished by his neighbors and friends. His funeral was largely attended at the Presbyterian church on the 8th, at 11 o’clock, Reverned Bodenham officiating, after which the body was gently laid to rest in the Maxwell Cemetery. The sympathy of the community is extended to the family in this the sad hour of their bereavement.”THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday. April 12, 1894, page 5. “J. M. Stark and son Roy were in the city Sunday attending the funeral of J. R. Cooper. Mr. Stark is brother of Mrs. Cooper.”
