John T. Handsaker, 87, of Colo, died Wednesday, Sept. 7, of natural causes at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Services were Monday, Sept. 12, at United Methodist Church in Colo.
John T. Handsaker was born Nov. 1, 1917, in rural Colo to John William and Clara (Burkhart) Handsaker. He was a life-long Colo resident. He farmed in the Colo area all of his life, retiring in 1980. He was a member of Colo United Methodist Church.
He married Dorothy Ackerman March 4, 1944. Their sons are John R. (Melanie) of Milwaukee, Mark L. (Linda) of Des Moines and Bruce Beckley of Akeley, Minn. He married Lois M. White, Dec. 2, 1964, and adopted sons John (Kathleen) White of Nevada and Tom (Rachel) White of Oklahoma City. Lois died in 1992. He married Evelyn Helminiak June 22, 2001, in Langley, S.C.
He is survived by his wife, five sons, 14 grandsons, 23 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Vernon (Hyllis) Handsaker of Story City and Merlin (Margaret) Handsaker of Colo; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Wayne (Ester) Handsaker of Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lois; and two brothers, Clifford and Wayne Handsaker.
Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing was in charge of arrangements.
