“FUNERAL SERVICES FOR ROY C. BEAL – Special to Journal. Maxwell, April 17 – Funeral services were held for Roy C. Beal, 57, Friday, April 7, in the Presbyterian church at Maxwell. The last rites were in charge of Rev. M. W. Eikenberry, of the Dallas Center Brethren church, a long time friend of the family, who was assisted by Rev. J. D. Brower, of the local Church of the Brethren. Music was furnished by the Phillips Community club quartette, composed of Harold Mohler, Clark John, Dale John and Dorus Myers, who sang “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere,” and “Good Night and Good Morning.” A solo, “Sunrise,” was sung by Dale John with Mrs. H. C. Larson as accompanist. Floral tributes of esteem were in charge of Mrs. Ray Gooden and Mrs. Ray Deo. Pall bearers were Maurice Bowen, Virgil Swarm, Ray Deo, Emmett Scott, Dwight Carpenter and Wayne Cleverley. Roy C. Beal, eldest son of Urias and Lydia Beal, was born in Washington township, Story county, April we, 1886 and departed this life April 5, 1944, at the age of 57 years, 11 months and 13 days. In the spring of 1898 he moved with his parents to a farm near Nevada where he grew to manhood. In 1907 they returned to Maxwell. Two years later he was united in marriage to Bertha White and there established their home on a farm near the place of his birth. To them were born seven children. When a young man he made known his desire to live a Christian life and became an active member of the Church of the Brethren to which he remained faithful until his death. He was called to the office of deacon in which he served wholeheartedly as long as privileged to do so. Secondary to his home and church interests were the associations with his neighbors and friends, especially those through the Phillips Community gatherings. His admirable character and unusual love for his family and home will be a cherished memory to all who knew him. His happiest moments were when his children were all at home. An unusual coincidence in his life was the fact he was born on Good Friday, celebrated his last birthday on Good Friday and the last chapter of his life here on earth was read on Good Friday of 1944. Besides his faithful wife and companion he laves three sons and three daughters, Jimmie W. of Maxwell, Dorothy Mae of Ogden, L. Robert of Boone, Blanche Emma of Des Moines; Claire Verlynn and Marily Ann at home. One son, Howard Kearney, preceded him in death. Surviving also are two grandsons, Wayne Robert and James Winston Beal; three sisters and one brother, Mrs. Carrie Hostettler of Colo, Mrs. Bert Link of Nevada, Mrs. R. Z. Brown and Ray E. Beal of Maxwell. Burial was made the family lot at the Church of the Brethren cemetery, 3 miles south of Maxwell.”
