Sterling Arnold Moreland, 82, of Ames, died Wedneday, Aug. 31, at Riverside Manor. A memorial graveside service for Sterling and Gloria Moreland will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Sterling was born Aug. 21, 1923, in St. James, Mo., the son of Sterling and Carrie (Lortz) Moreland. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943-45. He married Gloria Lucille Holt Sept. 26, 1947. During his 55 years in Ames, he owned and operated vehicle service stations, primarily with AMOCO. He was a 50-year member of the American Legion Post 37 in Ames.
He is survived by three sons, Denny (Bonnie) Moreland of Woodward, Arnie (Jana) Moreland of Ames and Jim (Laura) Moreland of Ames; two daughters, Carrie (Dennis) Carlson of Fairfax and Lu-Ann (Ed) Piatti of Lancaster, N.Y.; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mabel Martorana and Gertrude Hemme, both of St. James, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.
Stevens Memorial Chapel of Ames is assisting Sterling's family with arrangements.
