THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, August 25, 2005.

Orville A. Underland, 86, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, at Bethany Life Communities in Story City due to complications from two blood diseases. Services will be at 1:30 p.m., Friday Aug. 26, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell. Burial will be in Story City Municipal Cemetery.

Orville was born Jan. 10, 1919, in Cogswell, N.D. He attended grade school in rural North Dakota as well as Minnesota. He graduated from junior high school in Glendale, Calif., and from Washington High in Sioux Falls, S.D., in 1937.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1946 and served on the U.S. Mansfield based out of San Diego. He served time in Japan until his discharge in 1948. Once he returned to the Untied States, he began working at the Ford dealership in Radcliffe. He enjoyed working for Ford and extended his enjoyment by owning an array of Ford vehicles, including a Model T and a 1940 Coupe.

He farmed for 50 years in Hamilton County. He worked very hard farming and started out using the manual farm equipment of that time. Over the years, he enjoyed the advancement of John Deere tractors and other farm equipment.

He was a lifetime member of Bethesda Lutheran Church and served on the trustee board and calling committee. He belonged to the Jewell Lions Club and served as the local secretary. He committed his time to fundraising and received a pin honoring his perfect attendance of 20 years. He was a longtime member of the Hamilton County Farm Bureau. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 0500 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He moved to Story City in 2002.

He is survived by his loving wife Lois of 53 years; one daughter, Janis Williams; one son-in-law, Walter; one granddaughter, Chantelle; and one grandson, Anthony, all of Minneapolis; two sisters, Sylvina Ray of Story City and Delores Anderson of Hagerstown, Mass.; brother-in-law, Ray Nichoson; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Lloyd and Betty Ray; as well as a host of other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Iver and Alma (Sande) Underland; two brother-in-laws Herbert Ray and Orlin Anderson; and one sister-in-law, Margaret Nicholson.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today with family present after 6:30 p.m. at Soderstrum-Larson Funeral Home in Story City.

Soderstrum-Larson Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Memorials may be designated for Bethesda Lutheran Church or Bethany Life Communities.
