THE AMES TRIBUNE, January 1996. “MARY ELLEN TOMLINSON Feb. 11, 1899-Jan. 2, 1996. Mary E. Tomlinson, 96, of Des Moines, formerly of Collins, died Tuesday at her home of cancer. Funeral services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the Collins Christian Church, with the Rev. Michael Lopp officiating. Burial will be at Peoria Cemetery in rural Maxwell. Mary Ellen Holmes was born in Collins on Feb. 11, 1899, to George H. and Laura (Finnie) Holmes. A 1917 graduate of Collins High School, Miss Holmes married Kenneth W. Tomlinson on June 17, 1934, in Collins. Mrs. Tomlinson worked as a sales clerk in Indianola, and she and her husband owned Mobil Oil Service, Collins Mercantile Store and Collins Hardware Store. The couple moved to Des Moines in 1982. Mrs. Tomlinson is survived by a stepdaughter, Joyce Brewer of Albuquerque, N. M. She was preceded in death by her husband. Visitation will be Thursday from 1 to 8 p.m. at Cooper Funeral Home in Maxwell.”

THE NEVADA JOURNAL January 1996. “MARY ELLEN TOMLINSON Feb. 11, 1899 – Jan. 2, 1996. Mrs. Ellen Tomlinson, 96, of Des Moines, died of cancer in her residence on Tuesday, Jan. 2. She was born to George H. and Laura (Finnie) Holmes in Collins on Feb. 11, 1899. She graduated from Collins High School in 1917. She married Kenneth W. Tomlinson on June 17, 1934, in Collins. She eventually moved from Collins to Indianola and then to Des Moines where she had lived since 1982. She worked as a sales clerk in Indianola at Graham’s Department Store. She had been the owner of Mobile Oil Service, the Collins Mercantile Store and the Collins Hardware Store along with her husband. She was retired. She was a member of the Collins Christian Church and the Order of the Eastern Star, for which she served as Worthy Matron in 1947. Survivors include a step-daughter, Joyce Brewer of Albuquerque, N. M.; and a cousin, William Nibel of Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, who died in 1985. Visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 4, from 1-8 p.m. at the Cooper Funeral Home, Maxwell. Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 5, at 1 p.m. at the Collins Christian Church with Pastor Michael Lopp officiating. Burial will be in the Peoria Cemetery, rural Maxwell. Memorial contributions may be made to the Collins Christian Church or the Hospice of Central Iowa.”
