The pallbearers were: Frank Cerka, A. P. Chandler, Wm. Cockerham, Ray Koeppel, August Cerka and R. W. Shaw. Burial was in Zearing cemetery by the side of his wife who passed away just a little more than a year past.

William Frederick Young, son of John and Christina Young, was born on Oct. 29, 1852, at Lubeck, Holstein, Germany, and died at his home near Zearing, Iowa, on March 26, 1938, at the age of 85 years, 4 months and 27 days.

When five years of age, he came with his parents to Canada, settling at Guelph, Ontario. In 1869 the family came to Iowa and settled within a quarter mile of the present home. While a young man he spent some time in the employ of the Chicago Northwestern railroad at LaMoille and Nevada.

On November 30, 1875, Mr. Young was united in marriage to Miss Augusta L. Maronda, at Nevada. In 1878 they moved to present location, where Mr. Young has had 60 years of continuous residence. As a pioneer he watched the development of this section of the county, witnessing the building of the railroads, the founding of Zearing, and the conversion of the prairie lands into homes. He experienced the rigors of the climate. Being of a very hospitable disposition, he enjoyed his neighbors and friends, and his home was always open to all, including the early day ministers of the church. Mr. Young took an active part in the development of church and school in the community. He has served on the school board, and was a member of the Evangelical church for a little over 50 years. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. No. 651 of Colo, Iowa.

Mr. Young was preceded in death by his companion, Mrs. Augusta Young, on Jan. 11, 1937. He leaves the following sons and daughters: Ruth A. and W. C. of Zearing; Mrs. Carrie White of Waterloo, Iowa, and Fred A. of Colorado Springs, Colorado. A son, George, died at the age of 2 years in 1896. There are also 3 granddaughters, Miss Ada Young, Zearing, Mrs. Doris Buss and Mrs. Helen Easton, Colorado Springs, Colorado. One brother, A. H. Young, and a sister, Mrs. Anna Schuler, both of Marietta, Minn., and several nephews and nieces also survive.

His pastor said: "Life below has closed for one who was truly a pioneer, and who helped to build both materially and spiritually for home, for community and for country. There was courage, sacrifice and labor, and through it all the best things of life were not overlooked. Death has come as a transition into a larger life. The benediction of such a life remains with us to point us on the way.

"Some have known Mr. Young for many years, and under a variety of conditions. Others of us have known him during the eventide of life only. All appreciate him as a faithful servant of God, a laborer in his part of the vineyard of our Lord."

Relatives and friends from a distance in attendance at the services were: Mrs. Carrie White of Waterloo, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Coffin of Montour, George Coffin and family of LeGrand, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Rohwer of Garwin, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Otte of Clemons and Mrs. Henry Hundretmark of Steamboat Rock.
