Roland's Oldest Citizen Is Dead; Funeral Thursday

Roland, March 15--In the death of Askel Skromme, 96, at the family home in Roland Monday afternoon, March 14, Roland loses its oldest citizen and a life partnership of nearly 75 years is broken.

Death was due to infirmities and weakness from his advanced years, but he had only been confined to his bed since Saturday.

Mr. Skromme was a native of Skaanevik, Norway, where he was born 96 years ago, on December 22, 1841, and where he was married to Martha Orton June 25, 1864. There they continued to live for 21 years and there nine of their eleven children were born, two of home died in infancy. Two of their children were born after they came to America in 1885.

Coming to America they located first on a farm near Story City and then moved onto the Jonas Duea farm a mile and half west of Roland. Later Mr. Skromme purchased a farm three miles east of Roland where they lived until retiring and moving into Roland in 1914.

Mr. and Mrs. Skromme had experienced all of the hardships of the pioneers, both in their native land and in America, but they had managed through hard work, indominable energy and frugality to rear their large family well and comfortably, giving them the advantages of the educational system of their adopted country.

Plans had been under way for the celebration of their diamond wedding anniversary on June 25 of next year.

He leaves his wife and four of the eleven children born to them. The surviving children are Severt Skromme of Lee, Illinois; Mrs. J. A. Christian, Miss Carrie Skromme and Ole M. Skromme of Roland, as well as 22 grand children and 18 great grandchildren.

One son Lars Skromme, who during his life gained considerable prominence in local, county and state politics, through his activities, died a few years ago.

Other children who grew to womanhood here and died recently were Mrs. Martha Orton of Ortley, South Dakota, and Mrs. Linda Pulver of Cosmotolis, Washington.

Mr. Skromme was a man of industry and thrift, was a faithful member of his church and devoted to his religious duties and held the respect of the entire community. He had lived a long and useful life and will be kindly remembered not only by his wife, his children and grandchildren, but by a wide circle of neighbors and friends.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 17, upon the ninety-third anniversary of the birth of his good wife, who survives him. Rev. Olaf Holen, his pastor for many years, will be in charge of the prayer service at the home at 2:00 and at Salem Lutheran church at 2:30. Burial will be in the Roland cemetery.
