Funeral Services and Burial of James Cazel Meade

Funeral services for James Meade, 21, of near Colo, who died at LeMars early Wednesday, following an automobile-train crash there a few hours before in which three young companions--students at Western Union college--lost their lives, were held Friday afternoon at the Methodist Episcopal church in Colo, with Rev. Golden Thompson in charge, assisted by Rev. E. C. Boom, H. H. Proett and R. E. Kerney.

A brief joint service for James Meade and his fiance Mildred Menke another victim of the tragedy--to whom he was engaged to marry--had been held at Hildreth Memorial church at LeMars on Wednesday afternoon.

From LeMars the body was brought to his home north of Colo for the funeral and interment on Friday.

The sermon was preached by a male quartette composed of Rev. Thompson and the music was LaVerne Horner, Bob Lounsberry, William Lounsberry and Bert Lambeth.

The pall bearers were Clifton King, James Wilson, Herbert Hopkins, Carleton Hambly, Charles Jones and Edwin Rod.

Thelma Jones and Eleanor Myers were in charge of the flowers.

The following life sketch of the deceased was read at the funeral services:

"James Cazel Meade, son of Earnest and Pearl Meade, was born in Hamilton county, Illinois April 24, 1917. His parents moved to Iowa in 1923 where they have been engaged in farming.

he completed his public school education from the Colo school in 1935. That fall he enrolled as a student at Western Union College and would have completed requirements for the B. A. Degree at the next commencement in 1939.

"During his college life he was active in the athletic program, having won two letters in varsity football. He was elected president of the senior class. He became a member of Hildreth Memorial Evangelical church during his second year of college.

"He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earnest Meade, two brothers, Paul and Robert and a sister, Leta. An infant sister, Emma, passed away eleven years ago. His grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Tolley and Mr. and Mrs. John Meade also survive, also Mr. and Mrs. Roy Snover and family of Zearing, Iowa and family of McCallsburg, aunts and uncles as well as a number of other aunts and uncles and cousins in Illinois.

"James Meade was a young man of splendid character His college years were enriched by a large circle of friends. He was ambitious to obtain a good education and make the most of the opportunities before him. The passing of such a person is keenly felt by those who knew him. His task seems unfinished and yet in the hands of the great Master of Life we can only entrust those matters which we cannot understand, in the hope that some tomorrow shall reveal that which today does not explain.

"For some time he had kept company with Miss Mildred Menke and plans were being made for them to be married this next summer. Both of them were victims of the fatal accident. Those who were not permitted to be united in life were united in death."

Services for the two were held at Hildreth Memorial church at LeMars, Iowa, on Wednesday afternoon at 1:30. President D. O. Kime of Western Union college and Rev. G. O. Thompson, college pastor were the speakers. Scripture was read by Mr. Omer Lesks. Prayer was offered by Mr. Arnold Marzolf, and the obituary was read by Mr. Clarence Dehne. Music was furnished by a mixed quartette of college students accompanied by Prof. J. F. Jewett, and Prof. Edwin Danner, sang a tenor solo. Mrs. C. B. Parkinson, organist, played the Processional and Recessional.

Pall bearers were college friends, Glenn Hulsebus, Victor Miller, Junior Thomas, Melvin Farley, Chris Schmidt, Jesse Rottler.
