Funeral Services Monday Afternoon For Longtime Nevada Dentist, Dr. S. W. Arthur

Dr. S. W. Arthur, Nevada, died Thursday evening at Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge where he had been a patient since July 6, 1961.

Funeral services will be at the Ryan Funeral Home Monday afternoon at 2 with the Rev. James Dendler officiating. Burial will be in the Nevada Cemetery.

Arthur, son of George W. and Nancy Ann Perry Arthur, was born near Waterloo October 27, 1868, the youngest of seven children.

Preliminary education was in the district schools of Black Hawk County and continued in two years in a Waterloo commercial college, one year at Upper Iowa University at Fayette, followed by study at the school of dentistry at Northwestern University. He graduated with a degree in Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1899, second in a class of 168.

Moved to Nevada

Arthur began practice in Marshalltown and a year later came to Nevada where in August of 1900 he purchased the practice of Dr. Charles Hoage.

On November 14, 1900 he was united in marriage to Matilda Byers of Cedar Falls. She preceded him in death October 7, 1958.

Dr. Arthur practiced in offices in the old Representative Building on the site of the Hotel Story, then from offices over what is now the Ben Franklin. Later he moved to offices over Nevada National Bank.

During 53 year of practice in Nevada he was active in the Methodist Church, and was chairman of the building committee that erected the present church in 1931. He was a charter member of the Nevada Rotary Club, life member of the Delta Sigma Delta dental fraternity, life member of the American Dental Assn., and a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shrine and Eastern Star.

Since his retirement December 3, 1953, Dr. Arthur was occupied in the care of his home, lawn and garden. He had been at Friendship Haven in Ft. Dodge since July 6, 1961.

Survivors include one son, Hugh S. Arthur of Ft. Dodge and one daughter, Mrs. Elmer (Eva) Paul of Nevada, and one grandson, Dean A. Paul, Nevada.
