Last Rites Held For Hessel Bierma At Christian Church

Funeral services for Hessel Bierma were held from the Nevada Christian church Friday afternoon at 2 p. m. with the Rev. W. R. Tuttle officiating.

Mrs. Harry Sutherland sang two songs, "In the Garden" and "Beyond the Sunset." She was accompanied by Miss Virginia Bierschwal at the organ.

The many beautiful floral offerings were arranged by Mrs. Lee Cook and Mrs. H. D. Patterson. A large number of Nevada business men attended the funeral service in a group.

The casket bearers were Lee Cook, W. E. Horine, C. D. Knight, Marley Lobaugh, C. R. McConnell and Robert Ogden.

Burial was in the Story Memorial Gardens cemetery south of Ames.

Obituary

Hessel Bierma was born in Ringgold county, Iowa, April 18, 1891 to Dowe and Rinske Bierma. After an illness of over a year his death occurred in the Story County Hospital, Nevada, June 29 at the age of 69 years, two months and 11 days.

He received his education by attending one of the well known one room country schools in Ringgold County.

Feb. 19, 1913, Hessel and Ivy Jane DeLong were united n marriage and established their home on a farm in Clark County. Into this family four children were born.

In August of 1928, Hessel and his family moved from the farm to Osceola, Iowa and he began working as an agent of the State Farm Insurance Company. In 1932 he moved to Indianola and on Jan. 1, 1935 he came to Nevada, where he was a very successful business man with the State Farm Insurance Company and later as a real estate agent.

On June 30, 1956, Hessel and Esther Lanning were united in marriage at the Christian church in Nevada.

As a young man he united he united in fellowship with the Christian church and when he moved to Nevada transferred his membership to the First Christian church. He was active in church work and had served as Elder, a Trustee and as president of the church board. Always interested in the welfare of the community he was an active member of the Lions Club, the Toastmasters and was president of the Nevada Community Club.

There were twelve children in the Dowe Bierma [should be Douwe Bierma] family and Hessel is the first to pass away. He was preceded in death by his father and mother and by his wife, Ivy Jane, whose death occurred in Nevada Feb. 8, 1954.

Surviving are his wife Esther, to whom he would have been married four years if he had lived but one more day. He laves his three sons, and their families, Wayne of Nevada; Robert of Salina, Kan. and Harold of Santa Ana, Calif. and one daughter, Mrs. Helen Barrow and family of San Jose, Calif. He also leaves nine grandchildren. Eight sisters and three brothers and their families also survive him.

The eight sisters and three brothers surviving are: Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Loomis, New Virginia; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Franck, Murray; Mr. and Mrs. Dick Bierma, Sutherland, Neb.; Mrs. Yetta Franck, New Virginia; Mr. and Mrs. Gail Rusk, Newton; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Bierma, Indianola; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Sayles, Palo Alto, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bierma, Lorimor; Mr. and Mrs. Jay Hegtrom, Lawton; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Gilman, Cherokee and Mr. and Mrs. Dave Mullenburg, Sheldon.
