CIVIL WAR VETERAN ANSWERS TAPS

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR S. B. STEVENS HELD HERE THIS AFTERNOON.

Funeral services for S. B. Stevens, 78, Civil war veteran of Eighth street, this city, who passed away at Iowa sanitarium Monday afternoon, will be held from the Bishop Funeral Home this afternoon at two o'clock, with Rev. A. V. Hart in charge, after which the body was taken to Collins where interment will be made.

Pneumonia was the cause of death, he having been ill for the past thirty days. He had been taken to Iowa sanitarium a few days before his death, after it was thought that his condition was improved.

The deceased, one of a family of three children of Henry A. and Matilda Jane Stevens, was born in Van Buren county, December 7, 1847.

He was but 15 years of age when the call of his country was answered and he enlisted in the service and served throughout the Civil war.

He marched with General Sherman to the sea and was in many of the important battles of the war. He was twice wounded during the war and carried for the remainder of his life the bullets in his body.

In 1870 he began farming in Polk county. In 1876 he took up his residence in Union township Story county, three years later he removed to Sherman township ten years later located in New Albany township. During his farming he gained aa reputation as breeder of fine livestock.

About three years ago he moved to Nevada buying a home on Eighth street.

March 26, 1869 Mr. Stevens was united in marriage to Miss Dorcas Bullington of Polk county. She departed this life September 18, 1879. Mr. Stevens was married April 24, 1882 to Miss Emily A. Hanks who has preceded him to the great beyond.

Deceased is survived by three sons and three daughters, the children by his first wife who are Arthur Stevens, Reeheight, S. D., Mrs. Alice Buffington of Titonka, A. J. Stevens of Ames, Charles Stevens of Zearing and Mrs. Hattie Carver of Zearing and Mrs. Dorcas Webb of Colo. Six sons and five daughters by his second marriage. Those of the second family are Bradford and Squire Stevens of Collins, J. Q. Stevens of Fort Dodge, Mrs. Edith Williams of Shipley, Mrs. Jennie Hix of Zearing, W. J. Stevens of Collins, Iver of Nevada, Mrs. Ethel Hanson [should be Henson] of Zearing, Winifred Stevens of Nevada, Velma Stevens of Zearing and Thelma Stevens of Shipley. Thirty-six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive him.
