SOPER FUNERAL THIS AFTERNOON

SUDDEN PASSING OF WELL KNOWN CITIZEN AT AME EARLY THURSDAY.

Many Nevada people are in Ames this afternoon to attend the funeral services for the later Charles M. Soper, 70, which are held at the Adams Funeral Home, after which interment will be in the Ames cemetery.

Mr. Soper died shortly after midnight Thursday morning and the end came very suddenly. While he had suffered a stroke of paralysis a number of years ago and had been more or less of an invalid since that time his condition was not considered as critical and his sudden passing came as a distinct shock to the members of his family and friends.

Mr. Soper was a man of wide acquaintance over the county and his friends were numbered by his acquaintances. For over a half century a resident of the county, he has spent about 16 years of that time in the office of the clerk of district court, either as principal or deputy, and in that capacity had become one of the best known in the county.

Mr. Soper was a native of Delaware county, New York, where he was born January 17, 1856, a son of James H. and Martha Soper.

He came with his family to Iowa in 1873, locating first at Boone. Later he came to Ames and engaged first in the mercantile business. He continued his home in Ames and was married to Miss Ella M. Underwood September 16, 1879. Two sons were born to this union they being Bernice M. Soper of Nevada and Dr. Donald Soper of Ames.

The family home was in Ames until about 1899, when he was elected clerk of the courts and moved over to Nevada. He continued in this office either as clerk or deputy, until 1914 when he left the office and moved back to Ames.

The funeral services this afternoon are in charge of Rev. H. K. Hawley and interment will be under the ritualistic ceremonies of the Masonic lodge of which he was a long time member.

The many friends of the family over the county will extend to the surviving wife and sons their most profound sympathy in their hours of deep grief.
