OLIVER FUNERAL LARGELY ATTENDED

PASSING OF CIVIL WAR VETERAN WAS MATTER OF DEEP REGRET.

Gilbert, Nov. 5--In the death of L. Oliver, which occurred at his home in this place Thursday, October 30, Story county loses one of its pioneer residents and of the few surviving Civil War Veterans.

The funeral services were held from the Congregational church of Gilbert Saturday afternoon and was largely attended as a memorial of the splendid esteem in which the deceased was held by the people of the community.

Lovette Oliver, son of John and Mary Oliver, was born in Livingston County, New York, October 12, 1846. He was only six years old when he accompanied his parents to Indiana and nine when he went to Kenosha, Wis. He lived there until 1869, when at the age of 23 years, he came to Ames, since which time he has lived in Story County. He was reared to farm life, and was continuously connected with agricultural pursuits until the time of his enlistment for service in the Civil War. He offered his aid to his country in Lake County, Illinois, in February, 1865, and was assigned to duty with Company F, One Hundred and Fifty-third, Illinois Volunteer Infantry, with which he continued until the close of the war. When he returned home he taught school and studied photography. When he moved to Ames he opened a studio which he conducted for three years and then moved to a farm a mile and half southeast of Gilbert. When the town of Gilbert was founded about 1880, he opened a lumber yard there and was engaged in the lumber and implement business for 28 years. When he retired, he was the oldest dealer in those lines in either Story or Boone county, throughout the entire period he closely applied himself to business and at all times met the demands of his patrons.

Mr. Oliver was ever public-spirited. His interests were closely associated with the Gilbert Savings Bank in which capacity he served as director, and later becoming president. He served as clerk of Franklin Township for 15 years, was a member of the city council of Gilbert and later was elected mayor. He was a charter member of Frank Bentley Post Number 79, G. A. R., and was also a member of the Odd Fellows lodge of Gilbert. he joined the Congregational church at Gilbert when it was organized and has since been one of its active and helpful members. He served a great number of years as clerk, and was superintendent of the Sunday School for over 25 years. He, at all times, recognized his duties and obligations to his fellow men and stood as a high type of American manhood.

He passed to the Great Beyond Thursday afternoon., October 30, 1924.

In November 1868, Mr. Oliver was united in marriage in Lake County, Illinois to Lavina Ruth. To this union were born two children, Irene, deceased and Clifford of Graceville, Minnesota.

Those who are left to mourn his loss, are his wife, son, grandchildren, two brothers, one sister, other relatives and a host of loving friends.
