Funeral Rites Held at Zearing for Mrs. Amanda Norton
Zearing, March 17--Funeral rites for Mrs. Amanda Norton, 80, pioneer Zearing woman who died at Oskaloosa March 2, were held at the Brouhard Funeral chapel here with her pastor Rev. R. E. Kerney officiating. Burial was in the Zearing cemetery by the side of her loved ones already departed.
Among the relatives here to attend the last rites of Mrs. Amanda Norton held Tuesday were: Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Wessman of Oskaloosa, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Norton of Dundee, Minn., Mr. and Wilbur Siglin of Marshalltown, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Padgett, Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Siglin, Mr. Cedric Siglin of Waterloo, Lee Norton, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schuler of Swea City, and Mrs. Vint Cameron of Des Moines.
Pallbearers were I. S. Madison, D. E. Johnson, J. H. Hoberland, Wm. Young, Guy Clatterbuck, M. E. Dakins.
Mrs. Orpha Hankins and Mrs. Myrtle Martin sang several duets accompanied by Miss Delores Whitaker on the piano.
The flowers were cared for by Mrs. Guy Clatterbuck.
Amanda Rose Norton, daughter of August H. and Ann Frank was born at Aurora, Ill., April 16, 1860 and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. W. Wessman of Oskaloosa, on March 2, 1941, at the age of 80 years, 11 months and 14 days.
She was united in marriage to John T. Norton at Earlville, Illinois, on Nov. 26, 1879. Ten years later they moved to Iowa and located on a farm north of Zearing. In 1897 they moved to Marathon, Ia., returning to Zearing in 1910. After the death of her husband on June 27, 1924, Mrs. Norton continued to make Zearing her home until about four months ago when she went to spend her remaining days at the home of her daughter Lura.
Into the Norton home were born five children: Freeman of Dundee, Minn., Laura, who died at he age of two; Frank who passed away four years ago; Lura, Mrs. W. A. Wessman of Oskaloosa, Ia. and Raymond of Dundee, Minn. Besides the three living children Mrs. Norton is held memory by three sister, two brothers, 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren and a host of friends, many who lovingly called her "Aunt Mandy."
Mrs. Norton has been a long time member of the Evangelical church. She was a kind and loving neighbor. Death was due to cancer, which brought its sufferings.
